Here we offer a WEST END WATCH Co – SOWAR PRIMA WW, which has very nice MiIitary Style Black Dial and Hands. It is running very well, is accurate to within 1 minute per day and dates to the 1940s. The Sowar Prima is a waterproof & shock protected watch that was developed for the Indian & Far East Markets. There is a Broad Arrow Mark on the case back and I’m unsure as to whether this is of military origin.
The Swiss 15 Jewel movement is in superb cosmetic condition and working order, having been protected by a metal cover for all its life. It is interesting to note that this company adopted the use of the Incabloc shock protecting system in 1934, whereas some of the major brands did not do so until the mid to late 1940s.
The original 25mm Black metal dial has radium coated Arabic Numerals and spider hands with radium inserts. It has a distinctive red sweep seconds hand & is in very good condition. It is signed WEST END WATCH Co – SOWAR – PRIMA, has a glass crystal and a chapter ring which is graduated in 1/5 seconds.
The Rolled GOLD Case has some scratches, but is in very good condition overall. It measures 32mm in diameter, incl. crown and 36mm from Lug to Lug, which have solid bars.
The back is stamped EVERBRIGHT (Stainless Steel), bears the West End W.Co. 6 Point Star Trademark and is a Taubert & Fils decagonal screw back case with cork stem seal. One picture with stem pulled out, shows the casing for the stem, into which these seals are inserted.
It is stamped with SN 7383 47 and also with 47 between the lugs at 6pm. The inside back bears the F.B in Key Trademark of Borgel/Taubert & Fils, who were renowned for the production of their patented Waterproof and Water Resistant cases, which they supplied to makers such as: Patek Philippe, Vacheron & Constantin, Ulysse Nardin, The West End Watch Co, etc.
It has a 16mm “Montal” Rolled Gold, Stainless Steel bracelet, with deployment clasp, which measures 200mm overall – closed – Ref: L664.4
It is listed at €295 – Open to Offers
